Communications Director

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
United Way of Howard County is seeking a creative professional to manage communications programs in alignment with the organization’s mission. This position creates and implements organizational communications, ensuring consistent brand experience, plans and executes effective and strategic communications initiatives and projects that strengthen relationships with key constituencies. This position will function as an effective brand steward, providing peer-to-peer leadership, training, and support to help all staff deliver ideal messaging at all times. It oversees digital communications strategies, serves as the organization’s lead media contact, handling both short-term and long-term public relations activities.

PRINCIPLE COMPETENCIES & DUTIES:
 Develop and execute comprehensive annual communications tactical plan that supports the organization’s objectives, builds relationships with key audiences, and works to position United Way as the leader in community impact work.
 Work closely with Community Impact staff to understand United Way’s “product” in order to present clear information to the community (media, donors, volunteers, staff, consumers, etc).
 Work with Operations and Resource Development Staff in the implementation of communication objectives to ensure effective and consistent messages.
 Strategically position UWHoCo as a local thought leader, proactively develop targeted stories and work with internal staff and volunteers to identify newsworthy events and programs for placement in all communication channels (print, internet, radio, etc).
 Provide talking points and general preparation for staff and volunteers to clearly support the mission.
 Develop and update the organization’s crisis communication plan, as needed.
 Ensure every department is participating in checking materials for accuracy and taking full advantage of every opportunity to properly position UW as an inclusive, uplifting, energetic and engaging organization.
 Oversee organizational training on use of social media and serve as ambassador and role model for effective use of social media in both organizational and personal contexts.
 Apply communications strategy to events including signage, catering, scripts, etc as needed.
 Serve on integrated staff teams as assigned to support cross-departmental communications.

QUALIFICATIONS:
 Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, relevant, communication work experience
 Proficiency with print production, technical aspects of digital marketing, Adobe Creative Suite and other digital marketing tools, and Microsoft Office applications.

Community Impact Officer

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
United Way of Howard County is seeking a dynamic professional to help implement our efforts in achieving the community’s Kindergarten readiness goal and other community benefits goals. This position is responsible for initiatives and programs with specific projects assigned on an as-needed basis. This position will help strengthen existing relationships and forge new working partnerships with community leaders, service providers, corporations, funders, public sector, educational institutions, coalitions, and other stakeholders.

Health Internship - Paid
Employment Type: Internship: Paid

Reports to: Health Associate Tymon Whitfield.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
Temporary summer position to assist the facilitation of a 6-week summer camp offered to any school-aged kids. This program kicks in when school lets out. At no cost, this collaboration supplies lunch to kids under 18 – then we add fun. Every day brings something new, crafts, games, sports. Kids learn about safety, healthy eating, check out library books. The Meet Up, Eat Up & Read Up intern will assist Carver Community Center, 1030 N Purdum, and Taylor Community School, 3750 E 300 S, both in Kokomo, IN. This program fights summer food insecurity.

The position is available for the duration of the current program year, which is June 5 to July 17, 2017. Your time commitment would start at 8:00AM and ends at 2:00PM. The program runs from 9AM to until 2:00PM every Monday through Thursday (No Meet Up, Eat Up & Read Up on Friday’s).

PRINCIPLE DUTIES:
• Provide general classroom support to the Lead Teacher as needed (i.e. making copies, helping students with activities, greeting parents, assisting with meals, etc.)
• Create an environment for students and their families that, as accurately as possible, communicate the expectations for students, through actual practice and development of routines
• Work collaboratively with the Health Associate and community partners to implement activties
• Assisting the staff with children in the community center with duties as assigned
• Helping navigate the children          
• Reading to the children and helping with art/craft projects
• Helping children at the play and/or learning stations
• Assisting younger children in the restroom, making sure hands are washed etc.
• Making sure the child is welcomed as they enter the community center, and that they are picked up by the appropriate person(s)
• Have fun while helping children have the most fun they can over the summer.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, and ability to learn new software quickly
• Must successfully complete a background check
• Excellent communication skills – written, oral, interpersonal
• Self-motivated; works independently
• Valid driver’s license, insured motor vehicle Detail oriented, organized, hardworking, ethical, team player, goal driven
