Kokomo, IN, March 22, 2017/Press Release// United Way of Howard County launches Kindergarten Countdown and announces another summer of Kindergarten Readiness Camps this Thursday, March 23 at Western School Corporation’s Kindergarten Roundup held at Western Primary School at 2pm. Howard County Government announced a $15,000 grant to UW’s education initiative #75in5.

Kindergarten Countdown is a summer Kindergarten aligned strategy to boost early learning attainment, combined with a bold community goal that 75% of Howard County children will be prepared for Kindergarten in five years. #75in5.

The first five years of a child’s life are a time of enormous social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth. United Way revealed their big community goal this February collaborating with all five public school districts, as well as Bona Vista and the YMCA, forming the Early Learning Coalition.

Presently Kindergarten readiness scores are 45%, leaving 55% of students trying to catch up from the start. Children prepared for Kindergarten are less likely to be held back or drop out of school and have a better chance to succeed in college (post-secondary schools), work, and life.

Kindergarten Countdown is a partnership of area businesses, hospitals and government. Activities begin at all KHCPL locations with a free t-shirt, map of summer events (stops), and a passport. Summer events or stops invite incoming Kindergartners, parents, guardians to learn and enjoy new experiences around the community designed specifically for that grade level.

Thanks to these community partners for hosting summer stops: Bind Café, Edward Jones, City of Kokomo KPD, St. Vincent Kokomo, SOL House, Delphi E & S, Seiberling Mansion, Comics Cubed, YMCA, Kokomo Toys, Community Howard Regional Hospital, Elwood Haynes Museum, City of Kokomo Parks and Recreation.

Kindergarten Countdown Camps:
Free summer camps for students with little or no preschool experience. This program prepares children for their new roles as Kindergarten students. Camps are June 5 – June 29 from 8am – 12noon with two locations: Taylor Primary School and Pettit Park School.

Howard County Government announced a $15,000 grant to United Way of Howard County. This contribution paves the way for a five-year education goal set for Howard County called #75in5. This contribution will be recognized in correlation with the launch of Kindergarten Countdown at 2pm and commissioners will be presenting.
